Madison area residents with mental illness to appear on billboards to reduce stigma

The 22-year-old from Madison and four other local residents with mental illness or addiction will appear on billboards in Dane County in an effort to reduce stigma. The yearlong campaign, part of Journey Mental Health Center’s 70th anniversary celebration, is called, “This is my Journey.”

Morrisville native Pooja Mehta, 23, is one of the millions living with a mental illness. "I was diagnosed with anxiety and depression when I was 15 years old," Mehta said. "I lived with symptoms since 13, so, basically, as long as I can remember and all my adult life going to therapy taking medication and living with this disease."

Pooja Mehta is a first-generation American from an Indian family. She started Project: I Define Me — an initiative that lets people share their stories and show they are more than their mental illness.
